Absolutely delightful stay! Innkeepers Darren and Lynne are exceptionally warm and friendly hosts. You feel like you've known them for years after just meeting them. Breakfasts were delicious! Local cod smoked bacon, homemade waffles, whipped cream, fruit, yum! We stayed in the Trout River suite overlooking the rushing Trout River in the back yard. The soothing sounds of the rushing waters lulled us into a blissful slumber. The room was meticulously clean and tastefully decorated, the fridge was stocked with beers and soda, the TV's had the full cable packages, and the parking was just feet away. Common areas are ample and conducive to nice conversation with other guests. Our doggy was a welcomed guest (no extra charge) and was offered a sanitized doggy bed along with bowls. There are a limited number of local restaurants, all of which are typical continental fare or local bar food. We recommend that if you're visiting for a few days that you bring your passports and head over the Canadian border to nearby Sutton, Quebec. (Border is about 14 miles). There are excellent bakeries and restaurants in which you can indulge. The Inn is in a remote part of Vermont however it is less than an hour's drive from Stowe. When we checked out of the Inn we headed to Stowe and found it crowded and stressed. We were already beginning to pine for the serenity we left behind at the Swann. Be aware!! The hotel policy forbids consumption of alcohol not purchased on the premises (based on VT law). However, the inn has beers and wine available at a very reasonable cost. You have 24 hour access to their selection and they anticipate that you'll respect the honor system and itemize what you've consumed upon checkout. The Inn also adds a 15% gratuity to your bill. We can't wait to return!

Came here for a wedding and the inn made it wonderful. The hosts, Derrick and Lynn are lovely hosts, committed to making us feel comfortable and at home. The breakfast food has been delicious. Delicious fluffy waffles the first day; egg frittata & bacon the second. They were excellent at meeting the dietary needs of everyone in the wedding party. The room is set up with all the comforts one would need. The fireplace heating is a great touch. The main house always has a great supply of beverages, snacks, & homemade cookies & brownies. Recommend you stay here if you want to relax and enjoy the area.

One of our best vacations ever! We travel quite a bit, and try as often as possible to stay in dog-friendly properties so we can bring our pooch. We chose Phineas Swann after receiving a recommendation from Jay Peak resort when we inquired about a dog friendly place to stay. What a great surprise to find out that Phineas is so much more than just an average B&B. We arrived after a 7 hour drive from NYC to find ourselves in a slice of heaven in Montgomery VT. We spent our time in the rear of the property in a large 1-bedroom (one of 2 floors in an entire house) situated right on the river. Easy parking, a huge balcony and tons of space. We could have easily slept 6 in our unit. It included a full kitchen (very well appointed with cookwares, a keurig, snacks, and a few beers in the fridge!), living area with electric fireplace, cable tv, dvds, wifi (reliable and strong signal) and a washer and dryer in the bathroom. Plenty of room to sit or lay around. Also, a big dog bed and feeding dishes for the pooch (and poop bags outside for the walks). We also toured the other units in the buildings and they all have their own unique charms and sense of style. We'd have been happy in any room! In the main house, Darren and Lynn are always welcoming you and cooking fresh baked goodies! The big, deep, hot jacuzzi that sits just outside the main house was a nightly stop after spending the day on the slopes of Jay Peak (which is about a 10 minute drive from Phineas). Breakfast was planned daily and included generous servings of local food products, cooked deliciously by our wonderful hosts. It really felt like we were visiting family. There are games, more dvds, books, and snacks available in the main house. They also offer very reasonable prices on great beer and a stellar and well-curated wine list. Darren and Lynn also are very familiar with the local scene (we even arranged a fantastic sports massage/deep tissue through Lynn). With the entire place decorated for the holidays, we felt immersed in the warmth of the holidays. We also had great powder on the mountain. Montgomery is a tiny town (600-1000 people depending on season) but it is friendly, safe, and within easy driving of Jay Peak, Burlington, and lots of local areas. We fell in love with Phineas Swann and will be back often.

This place is amazing! Everyone is so friendly and kind! Our dog loved his visit too and we really enjoyed the breakfast which was the best ever and I am not a breakfast person so that says a lot. The jacuzzi tub in our room was so wonderful and the room felt so cozy with the wood stove on and relaxing ! We will definitely be returning!

Our 3 night stay at Phineas Swann was amazing. We stayed in the bulldog suite, which is a 2 br suite equipped with a faux wood burning stove and a mini fridge. The entire inn is whimsically decorated with mainly dog themed antiques. The hot tub is great after a day of skiing at Jay. Our hosts made us feel very welcome and at home from the first second we walked in to the last second before we left. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone.

I came to this bed and breakfast expecting your typical, "Vermont feel" lodging and dining experience. Well I easily got that at Phineas Swann but I got a lot of great and unexpected things that works so much in its favor. I guess, for me, the obvious was how this inn is completely decorated in antiques, but very original antiques. Everywhere you look you'll see "dog-inspired" knick knacks made of porcelain or ceramic. The owner installed many decorative shelves throughout to showcase these gems of history that he carried from his Manhattan antique shop. All are beautifully cared for and add a nice original flavor to the place. Beyond the details, the feel of the place is very cozy and welcoming. We stayed in the reportedly haunted Red Room. Despite not experiencing the haunt on our one night, we did get a really nice and quiet evening. The room is spectacular given its relatively small space. Very clean and like the rest of the place, quaint in decor. I got a superb night's sleep on the comfort foam/feather mattress bed. The food is superb. We had dinner that night which featured comforting lasagna served with caesar salad and minestrone soup. All was perfect and a satisfying meal Breakfast was a full plate of blueberry pancakes and sausage patties. All was cooked with love and care. The service staff and owner make this a very welcoming stay. Everyone was easy to talk to and also did well to let us be at home in the house without interruption. You will be very happy with the service here. I think it was top-notch for an inn of this type. They also have, in each room, the most complete and detailed "Guest Services" book I've ever seen in any hotel..ever! They've got detailed bike tour routes, driving tours, area history, food/shopping/sightseeing guidance in a gigantic booklet. I was very impressed by the care they took with that item. I can't think of any problems, like I usually manage to find in my reviews. I guess my only problem could be that I didn't stay long enough!! We will definitely head back here again. You should give it a try.

I was totally surprised when I got here, having made my reservation just hours before I came to town for business. I needed a dog friendly place to stay and this place definitely welcomes dogs! There are three rooms in one of their buildings where dog owners can stay with their buddies - the other buildings seem to be off limits to dogs which is certainly understandable. I was greeted in the driveway by the owner. Apparently he just took over the property a few weeks ago. I would have never guessed if I hadn't asked how long he had been the owner. He is super friendly and took me and the dog around the property to show us everything. The place is beautiful. The lawn and buildings are very well cared for and there is a picturesque river right behind them. The room itself is the best quality I have seen outside of 5 star hotels. Seriously, I can't understate this - everything is great. I'm looking forward to breakfast tomorrow after reading the other reviews. I'm sure it will be great. I am definitely coming back here next time I am in the area. Great job all around. Come check it out.

Reoccurring thought: did not stay long enough. We had a cabin right on the stream, great sound to sleep to. Our dogs loved swimming. The owners were exceptionally nice and accommodating. The breakfasts were to die for. This is a perfect place to get away from traffic and the hustle and bustle of every day life.

I finally joined Yelp and have started writing reviews for the places I feel truly deserve them. My boyfriend and I stayed here last winter while on a ski trip to Jay Peak. My thoughts? Absolutely wonderful! We LOVED the Phineas Swann. First, we happened to be driving all the way from NYC, and it took us longer than expected to get there and Jay waited up for us to make sure we could feel right at home when we arrived. Our first impression was that this B&B could not have been more homey. Christmas lights, hot chocolate and brownies, and a warm fire place were all prepped and waiting for us to enjoy and relax next to. I was literally shocked how many goodies they had set out for us, especially since they were complimentary. We happened to be the only couple staying there the first night, so I was impressed with how overboard they went for just 2 people-- I felt like royalty! Accomodations are cute and cozy - rooms are on the small side, but you truly feel like you are at home. They have tons of movies available if you want a night in, or plenty of recommendations for places to go in town. I cant stress enough how accomodating the owners are. Furthermore, if you are looking for a "romantic" getaway, this is the place for you. They have a hottub outside, which when surrounded by snow and christmas lights, its sooo nice to sit out there with a bottle of wine and just relax in peace and quiet. My next favorite thing = the breakfast. Man oh man can John cook! I was just blown away at how wonderful everything was. We didnt take advantage of the dinner they do each night, but i'm sure that would have been good too. We wanted to go out and see the town so we chose a cute little mexican place nearby. Overall, I can't stress enough (i'm sure you get the point by now lol) how great this place is. I highly highly recommend it -- especially for a romantic weekend away in the winter. Thanks Jay and John for a wonderful stay-- we will hopefully be back this year!

This place is such delight! We were there for three nights and wish we could have stayed longer. We had a lovely room with a kitchen overlooking the river. Beautiful sunsets from our balcony and then enjoyed soaking in the tub! The staff - Jay, Jenny, Emma along with BoBo and Phin - could not have been more gracious throughout our stay. Very helpful about the local area and with suggestions of where to go and what to do. This was always done over the sumptious breakfast outside on the patio. The rest of the time we were left alone to enjoy the solitude of the area. The inn is located in a quaint town that has a few other restaurants to enjoy. the inn itself is beautifully decorated and the gardens are gorgeous. But the best part for us was that our lovely large dog was allowed to be with us. There are at least 5 rooms in the inn that are dog friendly. There are bags, towels and dishes for the puppies which is very helpful when you are traveling with your canine friend. This is a definite return to place for us!

Under new management, we never would have known unless the new owners had told us they had bought only a week ago. Stayed in the main house; room was small but nicely appointed. Nice breakfast, beautifully presented. Lovely garden with screened gazebo, back yard overlooking the small river. We will definitely be back.
